SHOWCASING THE SPACE SHUTTLE ENTERPRISE
OPENS TO THE PUBLIC
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will open the Space Shuttle Pavilion, which showcases the Space Shuttle Enterprise, on Thursday, July 19th following an opening ceremony at 11:00 AM on the Flight Deck of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, located at Pier 86 (46th Street and 12th Avenue) in Manhattan.
Scheduled to make remarks at the opening ceremony are: the Honorable Charles Bolden, NASA Administrator; Ken Fisher and Bruce Mosler, Co-Chairmen of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum; Susan Marenoff-Zausner, President of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum; George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Company; Glenn Britt, Chairman and CEO of Time Warner Cable; and Tim Baxter, President of Samsung Electronics America. Three of the four original Enterprise pilots, Richard Truly, Joe Engle, and Fred Haise, will be in attendance and available for interview. The fourth original pilot, Gordon Fullerton, who is unable to travel, will be represented by his wife, Marie.
Immediately following the ceremony, Museum officials will participate in a ribbon cutting in front of the pavilion at approximately 12:00 noonofficially marking the opening of the pavilion to the public.
The Space Shuttle Enterprise was NASA’s first space shuttle, a prototype that conducted critical tests within Earth’s atmosphere in 1977. These pioneering tests paved the way for the successful orbital flights of later shuttles, beginning with the first flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1981. Following the retirement of the shuttles in 2011, NASA awarded Enterprise to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
To celebrate the grand opening of the Space Shuttle Pavilion, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum presents “SAMSUNG SpaceFest,” a festival that offers guests more than 40 interactive displays, activities and exhibitions, which will run through Sunday, July 22.
Highlights of “SAMSUNG SpaceFest” include:
- Meet and greets with astronauts Jeffrey Hoffman, Garrett Reisman, Kevin Kregel, Ellen Baker, Mario Runco, Jr., Charles Camarda, Michael Massimino, Karol Bobko and Lee Morin;
- A free screening of the popular film Star-Trek outside the Space Pavilion on Intrepid’s Flight Deck on Friday, July 20 at 7:30pm;

All “SAMSUNG SpaceFest” activities are free with admission to the Museum and are subject to change. A complete schedule of events can be found at www.intrepidmuseum.org.
