As an educational and cultural nonprofit institution, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum promotes the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth. Located in New York City on the Hudson River, the Intrepid Museum was founded in 1982 with the acquisition of the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark. Welcoming one million visitors annually, the Museum also features the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided missile submarine.

The Intrepid Museum is currently seeking educators to serve as Assistant Counselors for children ages 5-13 during Camp Intrepid which runs from June 27 to August 26, 2016. These seasonal positions will assist the Head Counselors in the execution of daily themed curriculum lessons, trips, and classroom management. Candidates should have experience working with children ages 5-13, and knowledge of aviation, astronomy, marine life concepts, as well as an interest in history or science.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Nine (9) week commitment to position from June 27 to August 26, 2016, assisting in supervising an assigned age group and implementing age appropriate lesson plans and activities as prescribed by thematic weekly curricula.
  • Attend five (5) mandatory camp staff orientation/meetings; tentative dates: June 20-24, 2016 and clean-up day, August 27, 2016.
  • Assist in preparing, planning, setting up and breaking down daily lessons and activities.
  • Work cooperatively with all camp staff to initiate projects when needed.
  • Assist with classroom management and upholding appropriate camper behavior.
  • Assist with maintaining a respectful and caring environment with and between campers and staff, resolving conflict between children when necessary.
  • Attend all camp staff meetings.
  • Maintain clean classrooms and storage spaces.
  • Inventory snacks, drinks, daily supplies and report status to Camp coordinator.
  • Attend mandatory work days and be punctual in a consistent manner.
  • Adhere to safety rules and guidelines of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
  • Perform other duties as required by management.

The qualified candidate will be a high school graduate or has completed some college classwork related to education, child psychology, American history, science, museum education, or related field and experience working with children in a supervised camp or school setting for 1-2 years. Knowledge of and experience with hands-on exploration, learning, and teaching techniques. Knowledge of and experience with conflict resolution philosophy and techniques.  Working knowledge of current trends in K-12 education, learning, and teaching techniques.  Ability to work cooperatively with camp staff as a group and to initiate projects and possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to speak languages in addition to English, a plus.  The ideal candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm and eagerness to be part of a professional learning environment, have strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects. Ability to work evenings and weekends required.  Certification or willingness to be trained in CPR and First Aid. Proof of prior DOE fingerprinting or willingness to be fingerprinted.
