VIETNAM EXHIBITION

In service from 1943–1974, the aircraft carrier Intrepid is popularly understood as an artifact of World War II. More than two decades after its return from Japan, Intrepid was again deployed to the Pacific Ocean to wage a different type of war. One of many U.S. Navy aircraft carriers deployed to Vietnam, Intrepid served three tours of duty in the Vietnam War between 1966 and 1969.  In the spring of 2015, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will create a temporary exhibition about the Vietnam War. The exhibition will use the experiences of Intrepid’s crew as a lens for understanding the history of the war with a particular emphasis on the role of the U.S. Navy.  Marking the 40th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon, the exhibition will draw from the Museum’s collections of archives, artifacts, aircraft and oral histories, as well as loan objects from other institutions, to offer a balanced narrative that will give voice to a range of perspectives about the war.  The exhibition will use the Museum’s largest artifact – the aircraft carrier Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark – to convey the day-to-day experiences of the sailors, aviators and marines who served on board the ship in the Gulf of Tonkin.
