Virtual INvestigations

distance learningDistance learning experiences at the Intrepid Museum bring the historic WWII ship and Museum’s collections to classrooms, libraries and senior centers all over the country. During program sessions audiences learn through inquiry, experimentation, discussion and examination of historical documents and photographs. Topics discussed include the USS Intrepid’s cruises, day-to-day life aboard a ship and the laws of flight. Virtual Investigations are great ways to learn more about science, history and technology for those who are not able to visit the Museum.

Created for school children, Virtual INvestigations are aligned with New York State and National Learning Standards, and come with pre and post programming materials so teachers know that their time in our video conference programs are spent wisely.

View a sample of our Take Flight program when we video-conferenced with a 5th grade class from Flinders Christian Community College in Victoria, Australia who’s time zone is 14 hours ahead of New York!

Intrepid Museum’s Virtual Investigations Program is made possible by the support of the Verizon Foundation.

Food and Nutrition: How do Astronauts Stay Healthy in Space?
K-5th

In a weightless environment, astronauts must make sure that they eat properly and keep their muscles fit. Students will determine healthy food choices for astronauts on a space mission and will create food menus that will go with an astronaut on a space mission.

Packing for Space: How Much is TOO Much Stuff?
NASA engineers need to take into consideration many factors when designing a spacecraft and determining how to get it into Earth’s orbit. Students will learn about the correlation between cost of a space mission and the weight of the cargo. They will then use their math and problem solving skills to identify what cargo a mission needs and determine the most cost effective way take that cargo into space!

Inspiration and Ingenuity- Intrepid in WWII
As a World War II aircraft carrier, Intrepid survived massive damadge to the flight deck, hull and rudder.  In this program, participants examine photographs, artifacts and plans from some of Intrepid’s most trying days – days during which inspiration and ingenuity meant quick thinking and survival.

Humanity Behind the Hardware
Intrepid was nothing without the crew that worked and slept on her decks.  Humanity Behind the Hardware uses a combination of former crew member interviews, ship’s artifacts, newspapers and cruise books to give us a better view of how crewmembers lived aboard a US naval ship.
