Intrepid Sails

For classes that are unable to travel to the Museum or that would like a pre-visit experience, this program brings Intrepid into K-12th grade classrooms. Led by Museum Educators, all programs include a multimedia presentation about life onboard Intrepid and a unique hands-on activity. Teachers may choose from topics on geography or code-breaking. This program is currently only offered for those schools in the five boroughs of New York City.

A limited number of free programs are available when booked in conjunction with a trip to the museum.
School Sessions: A maximum of three (3), 45-minute in-class sessions. Available Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM.

* Specific program times and dates will be determined based on class schedules, and in consultation between the teacher and Museum Educator.
Cost: $325 per school up to a maximum of 105 students (35 students per class)
Details: A museum educator will visit up to three classes in succession at your school. Each session includes an introduction to the Intrepid Museum and hands-on activity. Presentation requires the ability to project either to a Smartboard or appropriate screen. Educator will bring laptop and projector if no Smartboard is available.  Teachers may choose one of two programs for the visit. Educator will bring the supplies needed to conduct the program and will adapt the lessons for appropriate grade level.

Sailing the Seas
Sailing the Seas traces the path of Intrepid as she cruised into various ports around the globe. Students examine maps and learn about what life might have been like onboard for a traveling sailor. Students write a postcard about their imagined travels on Intrepid.
Secret Codes
Secret Codes examines authentic signal flags from the ship as historic artifacts and encourages students to use their imagination in formulating secret codes. The educator will explain why the Navy uses coded messages in operations. Students will create their own messages with signal flag coding.

Education programs and school rates are only available with advance reservations. Please make reservations at least two (2) weeks prior to the date in mind (for Monday visits, by Friday at 12:00pm). Reservations made within two (2) weeks of visit must be paid in full upon booking. Arrange your visit now by calling 646-381-5010 during our business hours - Monday – Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm (Wednesday – Sunday, 9:00am to 5:00pm for Birthday Parties) or completing our Group Request Form.
