Camp GOALS
The GOALS for Girls Summer Intensive is a FREE six-week program for current eighth or ninth grade girls. The application process is now open from January to March 2016.
Mission and History

The GOALS (Greater Opportunities Advancing Leadership and Science) for Girls program aims to increase the presence of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. We do this by providing female students with a positive influence, increasing their confidence and improving their attitudes toward STEM topics, equipping them with key skills and resources needed for success in STEM fields, and encouraging the pursuit of STEM-centric careers and studies.

Year-round programs, which include internships, weekend forums and the GOALS for Girls Summer Intensive program, offer female students, families, and their schools various pathways to connect to the Intrepid Museum and STEM opportunities.

  • GOALS for Girls began in 2008 as an in-school program funded by the Motorola Solutions Foundation in partnership with the Young Women’s Leadership Schools in New York City.
  • In 2009, the program evolved into a summer intensive program for middle and high school girls to combat summer learning loss and to give girls a safe and nurturing environment to foster the love of STEM subjects.
  • In 2012, GOALS for Girls expanded the summer intensive program to include science and student development programming, internships and ongoing educational experiences with local and national organizations.

Current funders of GOALS for Girls include the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the Velaj Foundation, Con Edison and the New York Community Trust.

GOALS for Girls: Science and Student Forums

“It is so incredible to see high school students who can barely contain their excitement about science. When a kid is so excited to ask a question that she can't even talk...it takes us back to why we started doing science in the first place.”

- Weill Cornell, graduate student and workshop facilitator

The GOALS for Girls Forums (formerly Science Weekends) provide teen girls, Summer Intensive alumnae, and their families and friends with an opportunity to delve deeper into STEM concepts, network with peers, speak with influential women in STEM and increase college-preparedness.

The Intrepid Museum’s historic collection and exhibitions, its connections with educational institutions and its engaging staff provide participants with a fresh perspective on personal, academic and career development.

Forums are held on select weekday and Saturdays at the Intrepid Museum. Teen girls between the ages of 13 and 18 are encouraged to attend with an adult chaperone. Interested families and friends are also welcome to participate. Registration is required.

GOALS for Girls: Summer Intensive

The GOALS for Girls Summer Intensive provides fifty girls in eighth or ninth grade the opportunity to expand their STEM thinking and skills. For six weeks, students are engaged in hands-on experiences, interesting fieldtrips and conversations with influential women currently in STEM fields.  The program’s curriculum focuses on aerospace science, Earth science and engineering, providing a range of study that appeals to different student interests.

The program nurtures critical thinking and problem-solving skills, social and emotional development, and parent/guardian involvement and support. Intrepid Museum educators, together with educational institutions and invited guests, give students a new, exciting perspective on STEM and the world around them through off-ship and on-ship workshops and demonstrations.

There are many 8th and 9th grade girls with outstanding potential to succeed in STEM fields; however, they may need additional guidance and encouragement to achieve academic and social success.

We ask teachers, school administrators and community leaders to identify students with the drive to expand their scientific knowledge, and to encourage them to apply to this program.

If you have a daughter or know of a female student who is eligible to apply, please click here for additional information.
