Concorde Update

Concorde to Leave Intrepid’s Pier 86 and Travel to Its Temporary Home at Aviator Sports and Recreation at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn

The British Airways Concorde, which has been a part of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and a major tourist attraction since 2003, will be moved to its temporary home at Aviator Sports and Recreation at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn on Friday, December 22, 2006. Concorde will remain there until Pier 86 is reconstructed and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum reopens to the public.

“While the Intrepid and the submarine Growler are both in Bayonne, we are pleased Concorde will remain visible to the public and potentially available for touring,” said Susan Marenoff, Executive Director of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. “With Pier 86 being completely rebuilt we needed to find another location. We are pleased to be able to partner with Aviator Sports and Recreation over the next two years.”

Concorde will be towed on its barge down the Hudson River with Jamaica Bay being its final destination. The plane will be lifted near the seaplane ramp located close to the old Coast Guard Station of Floyd Bennett Field. It will be lifted onto a runway and towed across the runway to a key location in front of Aviator Sports and Recreation. Floyd Bennett Field is part of the National Park Service.
