New Interior Architectural Design Firm

INTREPID SEA, AIR & SPACE MUSEUM SELECTS

AS DESIGN FIRM OF RECORD

After a national search, The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is pleased to announce that a design firm has been selected to lead the complete redesign of the ship’s interior exhibit space. The Chicago-founded firm of Perkins+Will is tasked with creating a new, interactive world-class museum inside the USS Intrepid with hands-on, experiential exhibits.

“It is a true pleasure to announce that we have selected Perkins+Will as the Intrepid’s exhibition space design firm,” said John Zukowsky, Intrepid’s Chief Curator. “Perkins+Will will work collaboratively with the Museum’s exhibits department to create a museum environment that will also showcase the latest in hands-on and interactive exhibit technology, ensuring that visitors to the Intrepid from across the United States and around the world will have a fun, inspiring and educational experience they’ll never forget.”

The Intrepid Museum is dedicated to the exhibition and interpretation of history, science and service as related to its home aboard the national historic landmark, the former U.S.S. Intrepid.  The design will complement the existing historic and more contemporary architectural features of the decommissioned aircraft carrier’s hangar deck, yet also create strong, distinctive additions that visitors will recognize as unique among historic ships such as the Intrepid, as well as reminiscent of major museum displays today. Audio/visual, multi-media and experiential teaching and learning opportunities will create a rich visitor experience when the museum complex re-opens on November 8, 2008.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to develop an exciting, educational and memorable world class museum experience that celebrates the Intrepid’s significant history, highlights the relationship between humanity and technology, and honors the valor of the men and women who have served our nation.  We’re looking forward to bringing the Intrepid back with a WOW!” said Eva Maddox,

“We are confident that Eva’s designs will pay homage to the Intrepid’s historical significance and further reinforce our Museum’s reputation as one of New York’s most important cultural institutions,” Zukowsky stated.
