The Growler’s enlisted dining and sleeping quarters, referred to as a crew’s mess and berthing. As you entered this compartment you passed the galley, or the kitchen on the port side. Considerably smaller than the typical kitchen in the average home, the galley prepared all the meals eaten by the Growler’s 88-man crew, including the Captain and the officers. The three cooks and their attendants prepared 264 meals a day plus 88 deserts.
The crew’s mess is also the center of entertainment aboard any naval ship; they had coffee, tea, soda and ice cream machines, and a library. If you look on a surface of the tables, you will see that there are game boards painted there.
Sleeping a board the Growler was always tight squeeze. Rows upon rows of bunking can be seen with little space to move around.
