Designated as the missile checkout and guidance center this area was the part of the Growler’s strategic deterrence system. A truly unique room, 35 years ago this space was classified top secret.
The handful of men that worked here controlled more firepower than the total of all the bombs dropped throughout WWII. Because of arms treaties, this nuclear guidance center will most likely be the only such system that the public will ever see.
Among the best-trained people in the Navy, they performed three critical functions in this small room. Seated in front of these consoles they controlled all stages of Regulus set up and launch. First they checked out the missile and made sure that it was functioning properly. They would then fire it from the launching platform. Lastly they guided the missile to its target or to a second control source once in flight.
