It is from this room that the sub was able to determine its position anywhere in the world with a high degree of accuracy with out having to surface. Keep in mind that the ability to hide under water makes the submarine nearly invisible, the deeper it dives the quieter its motors and propellers are, which enables the submarine to remain undetected under water. The ocean depths are the submarines best defense.
The US Navy developed SINS, Ships Inertial Navigation System, which enabled the submarine to remain under the surface and still be able to determine its position with accuracy. SINS was first successfully used aboard the Growler, and proved to be a key component to the concept of the nuclear deterrent.
SINS accomplished this by using a gyrocompass and accelerometers to constantly determine its position anywhere in the world. Therefore, Growler would be ready to fire at any time with excellent prospects of accurately hitting its target.
