Growler Torpedo Rooms

The USS Growler contains two torpedo rooms, one bow (front) and one stern (rear). These are some of the most important compartments aboard the submarine. The torpedo is the primary weapon system of the submarine. However, on board the Growler the torpedoes would only be used in a defensive role. Growler’s mission was to hide and remain undetected while maintaining an advantageous position from which she could launch her missiles.

The Growler has a total of six torpedo tubes, four are located in the bow and two are stern firing tubes. She could carry a total of 15 torpedoes, 4 in the forward tubes, 5 in the skids below the deck plates, 2 on the deck and 4 in the aft torpedo room.

There is also a head (toilet) and a shower located by these rooms. However, these could not be used until the food (potatoes, onions…etc.) stored in them was used up.
