Even though the Intrepid Museum is “on leave” we are looking for volunteer support. We need dedicated enthusiastic individuals to participate in a limited number of volunteer opportunities. The ship will be returning in November 2008 and we will be starting to recruit volunteers about 6 months prior to her return as docents, explainers, research and education assistants and more.
Volunteers are an integral part of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Our volunteer staff work either with the public or behind the scenes in our education, exhibits, membership or special events departments. They share their time, abilities, knowledge, and enthusiasm by working with or explaining the Museum's superb collections to the public. The work is greatly appreciated by the Museum and is both rewarding and fulfilling to the volunteer. Some of the tasks performed by the volunteers who work with the public include staffing the information and membership desks, acting as Explainers in the exhibition halls, conducting guided tours of the Museum, and assisting with educational demos and lectures. Volunteers who work behind the scenes make use of their clerical, technical, or research skills.
Current Volunteer Opportunities (through September 2008)
- Exhibits Display Associates:
Intrepid is looking for volunteers to work over the summer and fall assisting with historic restoration of ship compartments on the third deck of the Intrepid. This would involve metal fabrication, cleaning, painting, locating of missing furnishings, installation of furnishings. We will also be working on organizing the props and ship items storage rooms on third deck, along with continued work in revamping the exhibit work shop area. Hands on experience with tools is helpful.
- Airplane Restoration Associate:
Intrepid currently has 20 aircraft requiring all different levels of structural repair and restoration. Some aircraft require the replacement, and in a few instances fabrication, of the clear plexi-glass components. These aircraft are and will remain non-flying examples but repairs will be consistent with general practices of actual aircraft structural maintenance. Personal safety is of the utmost importance and all volunteers will be provided personal protective equipment as required by the task they are performing. Mechanical aptitude is very helpful. This work takes place in Staten Island.
**You will be called for an interview if the present needs of the Museum seem to match your stated abilities and available time. Your interest in serving the Museum is most welcome.
