Legends of Aerospace Visit the Intrepid Museum
It took one day longer than expected but astronauts Neil Armstrong, Bob Gilliland and Air Force Ace Steve Ritchie visited the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on Sunday, March 14 as part of the Legends of Aerospace tour.
The Legends, who had just completed a journey overseas to visit and spend time with our troops serving our country across the world, discussed their personal experiences on the trip as well as their as aviation careers at a panel discussion and participated in a meet and greet with museum guests afterward.
The Legends group was scheduled to visit the Museum on Saturday but was forced to delay one day due to the heavy winds and bad weather that prevented them from getting to New York City on Saturday. The bad weather also prevented the group from arriving via helicopter landing on Intrepid's Flight Deck. But it certainly did not put any damper on there visit as guests were treated to a once-in-lifetime experience.
Intrepid Exhibits "Mission to Mars"
Intrepid will be hosting a full size replica of the Mars Rover for public viewing in Exploreum. This display will be run the public through a time line of the very first decision by the US to explore space travel to present day efforts and technology. It is our intent, based on funding, to include video and interactive stop within the timeline. This will make clear the role and time in history that Intrepid participated in the history of the US Space Program.
NASA Weekend a Hit at Intrepid
NASA Weekend at Intrepid was a big hit again this year as Museum guests were treated to amazing sites, sounds, demonstrations and speakers from Friday, November 20 – Sunday, November 22.
NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver was the featured speaker on Saturday as she shared her experiences and offered insight on NASA programs with museum visitors in the Howard and Allison Lutnick Theater before taking a tour of the Intrepid with Executive Director Susan Marenoff. As deputy administrator, Garver is NASA’s second in command and is responsible for providing leadership, planning and policy direction for the agency. Garver was nominated for the position by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2009.
On Friday night, there was a special VIP Panel for Museum Members and invited guests featuring NASA Astronaut Mike Massimino, NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Public Outreach Alan Ladwig, and Nancy Conrad, Founder and Chairman of the Conrad Foundation, an organization built upon astronaut Charles "Pete" Conrad's history of innovation and entrepreneurship. The presentation covered topics such as our space program, new trends in innovation and technology and how to inspire our youth to become innovators.
Massimino kicked off the weekend on Friday by sharing his outer worldly experiences with students from Aviation High School and M137 in Queens and visitors to the Museum with two different presentations. Massimino, a Franklin, New York native, recently returned from the Hubble telescope servicing mission and is the first person to ever “tweet” from space.
The weekend, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11, the first successful lunar landing mission which took place in July 1969, also included interactive programs and demonstrations paying tribute to NASA’s efforts and achievements.
Among the NASA artifacts and multimedia programs and exhibits that visitors experienced were lunar samples, including a moon rock that guests could touch, a 3-D Mars presentation with a Mars Rover, an authentic Mars Mark III space suit model and the history of Apollo revealed through graphics and models.
The USS Intrepid served as a primary NASA recovery vessel before being decommissioned in 1974.
