The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a non-profit, educational institution featuring the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, the space shuttle, Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided missile submarine. Opened in 1982, the Museum, anchored aboard the former USS Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark, has welcomed more than 2 million visitors since 2012. The Mission of the Intrepid Museum is to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming, in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth.

The Intrepid Museum is currently seeking educators to serve as Group Counselors for children in grades K-5 during Camp Intrepid which runs from June 24 to August 23, 2019. These seasonal positions will work together with the Assistant Counselors in the execution of weekly themed curriculum lessons, trips, and classroom management. Candidates should have an interest in aviation, astronomy, history, science, and marine life concepts and be open to learning about them through our pre-camp trainings and exploring them with the children.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • 9 week commitment to position from June 17 to August 23, 2019, including long term lesson preparing and planning; daily setting up and breaking down of classroom and materials.
  • Attending mandatory camp staff orientation/trainings: tentative dates: June 17-21, weekly staff meetings and August 24-clean up day.
  • Coordinate, supervise and lead an assigned camp group.
  • Implement age-appropriate lesson plans and activities as prescribed by thematic weekly curricula.
  • Integrate Museum exhibits and artifacts into weekly lessons.
  • Maintain clean classrooms and storage spaces.
  • Work cooperatively with all camp staff in a group and initiate projects.
  • Be responsible for using classroom and behavior management skills as needed for camper behavior.
  • Be a model of exemplary behavior, maintaining a respectful and caring environment with and between campers and staff.
  • Guide children to resolve conflict between peers should conflict arise.
  • Attend contracted work days, being punctual and aware that the program and others depend on you.
  • Adhere to safety rules and guidelines of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
  • Perform additional duties if asked/required by management.

Qualified candidates will possess or will be working towards a BA/BS in education, American history, science, museum education, or related field graduate and experience working with children in a supervised camp or school setting for 2-5 years.
Candidates should have:

  • Experience working with children ages 5-11
  • Knowledge of and experience with hands on exploration, learning, and teaching techniques.
  • Knowledge of and experience with conflict resolution philosophy and techniques.
  • Knowledge of current trends in K-12 education, learning, and teaching techniques. The candidate will provide evidence (lessons, teaching certificate or comparable) of working with children ages 5-11.
  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm and eagerness to be part of a professional learning environment, have strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects. 
  • Ability to speak languages in addition to English, a plus.
  • Certification or willingness to be trained in CPR and First Aid.
  • Proof of prior DOE fingerprinting or willingness to be fingerprinted.
