As an educational and cultural nonprofit institution, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum promotes the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth. Located in New York City on the Hudson River, the Intrepid Museum was founded in 1982 with the acquisition of the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark. Welcoming one million visitors annually, the Museum also features the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided missile submarine

We are seeking a creative, organized, energetic and well-spoken individual who, as a Museum Tour Guide will deliver educational programming centering on the Museum’s unique collections and historic site. This position reports to Senior Manager of Public Tours and Talks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Delivers and leads Public Tour and Talk programming as required by the daily schedule or as requested through Education, Special Events or other programs.
  • Capable of researching, and interpreting historic information, images, objects and technologies.
  • Provide historical information about Museum artifacts while working in exhibit galleries
  • Assist in museum box office as assigned to promote public tour to visitors.
  • Assist at the tour check-in desk as assigned, providing services and ensuring museum visitors receive all necessary tour information.This is an hourly position.
  • Act as an ambassador of the museum in service to our visitors.
  • This is an hourly position.
  • Performs other duties as required by management.

Technical Job Specifications:

  • Qualified candidates will have a minimum Bachelor’s degree in History, Education, Museum Studies or related field.
  • Must have experience in public tour programs, museum education, visitor experience, or public program delivery in a cultural setting.
  • The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic team member with strong written and verbal communication skills who is able to work collaboratively across departments. Must be comfortable in front of large audiences that are both diverse and multigenerational.
  • Must exhibit a mature, flexible and professional demeanor both in presentation and actions.
  • Multi-lingual applicants with fluency in any languages other than English especially Spanish, and French are strongly encouraged to apply.

Additional Competence Requirements:

  • Proficiency in MS Office, and Excel required.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary will be required.
  • Experience with ticketing systems a plus, but training on specific system will be provided.
