The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, one of New York City’s most original educational institutions, uses history and technology to inspire innovation and leadership. A collection of technological firsts informs visitors about modern advancements, showcases what is possible and encourages people to dream. The Intrepid Museum has delivered high-quality education programming to hundreds of thousands of students, teachers and lifelong learners for over 25 years and its Access Initiative continues to respond to the growing need for quality Museum experiences for all audiences of all abilities.

A Per Diem Educator is sought for supporting and delivering programs on and off site that make use of the Museum’s collection to engage students, families and adults, especially individuals with cognitive, sensory, physical, emotional and behavioral disabilities.

Program delivery for self-contained and ICT special education classes primarily takes place between the hours of 10:00am and 1:00pm. Program delivery for family programs primarily takes place on Saturday mornings and Sunday mornings and afternoons. There are additional opportunities to teach and present in offsite settings such as schools or community organizations.

$20 per hour/ average of 15 hours per week

This position is subject to seasonal changes in volume of classes and programs delivered. Examples of teaching opportunities are as follows:

  • On-site specialized school and adult programs for individuals with disabilities
  • On-site weekend family programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities
  • On-site weekend family programs for current and former military service members and their children
  • On-site camp counselor for children with developmental disabilities (3 weeks of the year)
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, science, history, museum studies or a related field. Master’s and/or teacher certification a plus, especially in special education.
  • Two years related experience and sensitivity working with varied populations in an educational setting
  • Understanding of object and inquiry-based teaching practices
  • Experience differentiating lessons to meet specific academic and social-emotional learning goals
  • Knowledge of best practices for English Language Learners and disability specific instructional strategies
  • Outgoing personality, enthusiastic attitude
  • Department of Education fingerprinting a plus
  • Multi-lingual or bi-lingual a plus
A successful candidate:
  • Must be able to teach large multi-generational groups in a variety of settings
  • Be able to think and make informed decisions quickly and under pressure
  • Have excellent communication and organizational abilities
  • Be able to work collaboratively and flexibly with colleagues possessing a variety of skills, trainings and experiences
  • Be available to work weekends
