The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, one of New York City’s most original educational institutions, uses history and technology to inspire innovation and leadership. The Intrepid Museum has delivered high-quality education programming to hundreds of thousands of students, teachers and lifelong learners for over 25 years and its Access Initiative continues to respond to the growing need for quality Museum experiences for all audiences of all abilities.

A Per Diem Educator is sought for delivering offsite after school programs within the five boroughs of New York City. CASA (Cultural After School Adventures), a New York City Council initiative addresses the needs of children in the after school hours. The per diem educator in this role will be partnered with one-two schools. Each partnership runs approximately January 1, 2019-June 30, 2019. Each CASA school receives 17-20 sessions with the sessions occurring once or twice per week. A majority of the sessions run at the school site, with approximately 3 sessions taking place at the Intrepid Museum. Each session takes place approximately between 2:30pm and 5:30pm. Some Saturdays may be required.

$20 per hour/ average of 8 hours per week, per school

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, science, history, museum studies or a related field. Master's and/or teacher certification a plus, especially in special education.
  • Two years related experience and sensitivity working with varied populations in an educational setting
  • Understanding of object- and inquiry-based teaching practices
  • Experience differentiating lessons to meet specific academic and social-emotional learning goals
  • Knowledge of best practices for English Language Learners and disability specific instructional strategies
  • Outgoing personality, enthusiastic attitude
  • Available to work afternoon
  • Department of Education fingerprinting a plus
  • Multi-lingual or bi-lingual a plus

A successful candidate:
  • Must be able to teach large multi-generational groups in a variety of settings
  • Be able to think and make informed decisions quickly and under pressure
  • Have excellent communication and organizational abilities
  • Be able to work collaboratively and flexibly with colleagues possessing a variety of skills, trainings and experiences
  • Be available to work weekends
