As an educational and cultural nonprofit institution, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum mission is to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth. Located in New York City on the Hudson River, the Intrepid Museum is centered on the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark. Welcoming over one million visitors annually, the Museum also features the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided missile submarine.

Intrepid Museum is seeking a full-time Senior Manager of Community Engagement & Family Programs. Reporting to the Vice President of Education & Evaluation, this position requires someone who is creative, extremely organized, energetic and well-spoken to oversee a team with wide-ranging programmatic responsibilities. This person will work with all departments within the Museum and partner with outside organizations and city agencies to promote the Museum’s mission. This position has three direct-reports who are responsible for developing and delivering daily science and theater demonstrations, offsite and onsite SHTEAM (Science, History, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) programming for community groups and alternative learning sites, virtual fieldtrips and family programming. The Senior Manager of Community Engagement & Family Programs is the public face of outreach for the Museum and so must be able to thrive in new and unusual environments. This position has oversite of the Manager whose role is supervising educational aspects of weekend and evening programs, including festivals such as Fleet Week and Kids Week. Ideal candidates will have experience developing and delivering educational public programs and/or performances for both formal and informal settings, experience providing outreach to a variety of communities, especially underserved communities, and experience leading a team of diverse talents.  

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide oversite of the development of Intrepid’s Community Engagement & and Family Program’s content, including daily demos, planetarium shows, theater performances, onsite and offsite programs, virtual fieldtrips via videoconference or teleconference and family programs.
  • Being prepared to deliver any of the above programs.
  • Work with the Museum’s Evaluation team to track and evaluate programs to ensure deliverables for multiple grants are met and reported to various funders.
  • Create and track budgets to align with grants.
  • Nurture relationships with external partners including other not-for-profits, and city agencies to expand Intrepid’s impact through collaborative projects.
  • Represent the Museum at conferences, public events and media events.
  • Perform other duties as required
Qualified candidates will have a minimum a Bachelor’s degree in Education, Museum Studies or a related field. Masters degree in Education, Museum Studies, Arts Education or related field strongly preferred.  A minimum of three years’ experience at the manager or director level. Proven skills in prioritizing and organizing multiple long-term projects. Experience working collaboratively in a professional setting, including with external partner organizations and clients. Strong written and verbal communication skills

Knowledge of best practices in public engagement in informal learning environments. A strong sense of social justice and a track record of working with disadvantaged youth and adults.
