The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a non-profit, educational institution featuring the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and other historic aircraft as well as a cold war era guided missile submarine. Opened in 1982, the Museum, anchored aboard the former USS Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark, has welcomed more than 1 million visitors annually since 2012. The mission of the Intrepid Museum is to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming, in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth.

The Museum seeks a Curatorial Associate to support a grant-funded project that will explore underrepresented stories in U.S. Navy service by drawing from the collections of museums across the United States. This is a terrific opportunity for a candidate with excellent organizational and communication skills who is interested in curatorial work and has a passion for bringing untold stories to light.

This is a full-time position for a term of one year, from January through December 2022.
This position is funded through the NEH American Rescue Plan: Humanities Organizations grant.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the point of contact for participating museums across the United States.
  • Organize, attend and record project meetings.
  • Compile and organize collections inventories.
  • Research objects, archives and oral histories in the Museum’s collections.
  • Conduct research using external archives and collections.
  • Coordinate rights and permissions, digitization and reproductions from outside organizations.
  • Develop content for an accessible mobile guide, including research, writing and editing.
  • Work with internal committees to review training materials, tour scripts, lesson plans and other materials based on project content.
  • Collaborate with other departments across the Museum, including Education, Communications, Marketing, Video Production, and Exhibits.
  • Provide additional research, editing and writing support for the project team as required.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent skills in research, writing, project management and content development, along with familiarity with most of the responsibilities listed. Two (2) or more years of experience working in a museum, cultural organization or related organization is required. Candidates who also possess a degree or demonstrated interest in a humanities field such as history, museum studies or public history will be given priority (masters in progress preferred). The position requires excellent communication skills, both verbal and written; superior presentation skills; and sound judgment. Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

The annual salary for this position is $50,000.
