The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is one of America’s leading historic, cultural and educational institutions. The Museum's mission is "to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth."  The Museum pursues this mission through a dynamic and enriching exhibition environment recounting human stories behind the machinery on display in relation to the service era of the Intrepid: in World War II, the Cold War, NASA recovery missions and three tours in Vietnam. In connection thereto, the Museum delivers a broad range of credible, innovative, and engaging educational programs supplementing classroom learning in history, science, and leadership as well as extensive public and proprietary programs honoring those who serve our country – all to inspire our youth.
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum seeks a highly motivated individual to fill the full-time position of Collections Technician.  This person will report to the Collections Manager and work with the larger Exhibits Department to fulfill the mission of the Intrepid Museum.  This position requires organization, strong communication, physical agility and a can-do attitude as well as the ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the day to day collections tasks including but not limited to: housing and preparation of documents, media, and artifacts, fabrication of mounts, exhibit installation, preventive conservation and research assignments.
  • Catalog incoming object acquisitions and condition report loaned artifacts
  • Enter detailed, accurate data into the Museum’s database, TMS
  • Photograph artifacts to a museum quality standard including proper background, lighting and post production.
  • Participate in collections review meetings to determine proper status of various collection items.
  • Aid in ship documentation project as needed, which includes: photographing ship’s spaces, recovering historic objects and completing the associated data entry
  • Aid in the research and development of collections policies.
  • Perform other duties as required by management

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will have a BA/BS, MA preferred in Museum Studies, History or other relevant discipline
  • Minimum of 1-2 years museum registration and/or collections experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 
  • Familiarity with collections management databases (TMS preferred)
  • Industry knowledge of best practices for object handling, preventative conservation, digital preservation, museum registration and collections management procedures
  • Ability to maneuver through dimly lit narrow passageways, climb up/down steep ladders and move heavy collections objects with assistance.
  • Technically literate, including experience with digital photography and the processing and management of digital media.
  • Experience in photographing, scanning and digitization of artifacts, including lighting and post-production
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
