The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a non-profit, educational institution featuring the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided missile submarine. The Mission of the Intrepid Museum is to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming, in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth.

Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is located on board the former U.S. Navy aircraft carrier Intrepid, which served in World War II, the Cold War and Vietnam War. During Intrepid’s period of military service, the U.S. military drew upon athletics to train service personnel, provide recreational outlets and improve morale on the home front. Over the decades, prominent athletes served in various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces often playing critical roles.

We are seeking an independent researcher/writer/historian who is versed in U.S., military and sports history and leadership. This project will result in a detailed proposal/survey identifying possible dynamic storylines and viable checklist from which to create a physical exhibition (objects, paper materials, media). (Please note that Intrepid’s exhibit spaces are not climate controlled).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research, identify artifacts and develop potential storylines.
  • Develop comprehensive object and media checklist to accompany storylines.
  • Create a document outlining similar project at other national museums and cultural centers.

Qualifications:
Master’s degree in U.S., military and or sports history (PhD preferred) and three or more years of related experience and/or advanced training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents. Ability to write treatments/proposals and conduct research at archives either on-line or in person. Extensive knowledge of and interest in U.S. military, sports and cultural history required. Superior writing skills.
