The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a non-profit, educational institution featuring technological firsts: the historic aircraft carrier Intrepid, the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided missile submarine. Opened in 1982, the Museum, anchored aboard the former USS Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark, has welcomed more than 1 million visitors annually since 2012. The mission of the Intrepid Museum is to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming, in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth.

Intrepid is seeking a full-time experienced Grant Accountant who will report to the AVP, Government Grants Development & Management within the Finance Department. This position offers an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to utilize their skills and contribute to the on-going growth and development of the Museum. They will be responsible for a portfolio of government and foundation grants: partnering with program staff to develop proposal and project budgets, monitoring grant expenditures and analyzing spending levels; managing general ledger accounts and reconciliations; facilitating timely close-out of grants; and assisting with annual audits. Essential duties are:

  • Review grant award documents to identify and understand grant-specific requirements.
  • Develop and maintain grant-reporting schedules.
  • Monitor and reconcile grant expenditures regularly
  • Review and ensure expenditures are allowable and in compliance with grant requirements.
  • Provide internal stakeholders with timely and accurate financial information
  • Communicate variances and discrepancies to program management staff.
  • Prepare grant journal entries and adjustments quarterly. 
  • Ensure timely submission of all required reports to government agencies and private funders.
  • Prepare reimbursement requests for grants and contracts.
  • Maintain complete and physical and electronic grant files in an organized and audit-ready manner.
  • Assist with grant audits, including annual A-133 audits.
  • Develop budgets for grant proposals.
  • Undertake special projects as assigned, including assistance with grant proposals.
  • Perform other duties as required by management.


Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting with at least 3 years of experience, preferably working in the not for profit environment. Demonstrated familiarity with cost accounting standards and OMB Uniform Administrative Requirements a plus.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and Word is required.
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and complete assignments under strict deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with people in a multi-disciplinary team setting. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
