The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a non-profit, educational institution featuring the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and other historic aircraft as well as a cold war era guided missile submarine. Opened in 1982, the Museum, anchored aboard the former USS Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark, has welcomed more than 1 million visitors annually since 2012. The mission of the Intrepid Museum is to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming, in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth.

Intrepid Museum is looking for a full-time Accounting and Payroll Manager.

Do you possess a strong attention to detail and organization? If so, Intrepid Museum wants to hear from you about the opportunity to join our Finance team. The Accounting and Payroll Manager will assume a key role in the Museum’s Finance Department, reporting to the Controller.  The Accounting and Payroll Manager will be responsible for supervising a staff of three (3) in the day-to-day functions of the Finance Department to ensure efficiencies and timely and accurate financial reporting.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee and manage the general accounting functions, including, but not limited to: accounts payable, accounts receivable, and the general ledger
  • Oversee work with Visitor Services and Institutional advancement to monitor and reconcile contributions, pledges, ticket sales, rentals, and special event revenue
  • Review and approve general ledger journal entries
  • Manage the full scope of bi-weekly payroll process, including submission of benefits payments, and preparation of  payroll journal entry and month-end accruals
  • Reconcile the payroll general ledger accounts and resolve any discrepancies
  • Execute month-end close
  • Assist in preparation of year-end financial audit
  • Develop a team of three by managing performance, setting goals, providing ongoing training, and maintaining strong employee relationships
  • Engage with cross-departmental staff for purposes of financial training, reporting and budget monitoring
  • Responsible for sales tax liability and receivable and filing annual sales tax payment and refund
  • Assist Controller in implementation of effective and efficient procedures
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications candidates will have a B.A. in Accounting or Finance with 4+ years of non-profit experience. Knowledge of accounting, budgeting, internal control principles, and not-for-profit GAAP. Hands-on experience of payroll processes and understanding of relevant payroll regulations. Experience with ADP Workforce Now desired. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a highly motivated, energetic team. Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work toward solutions that benefit departments and the organization. Solid attention to detail, excellent organizational and time management skills. Strong computer skills essential; intermediate Excel user. Experience in NetSuite and ADP GL Interface journal entry portal a plus. Ability to multitask and work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
