The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a non-profit, educational institution featuring the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided missile submarine. Opened in 1982, the Museum, anchored aboard the former USS Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark, has welcomed more than 2 million visitors since 2012. The Mission of the Intrepid Museum is to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming, in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth.

The Intrepid Museum is looking for a Director, Groups and Tourism. This position will provide strategic direction and daily operations for the overall department in promoting the sales of group visits, FIT vouchers, concierge program, the overnight program “Operation Slumber,” and the birthday party program at the museum by soliciting and building new contacts while leveraging existing relationships/programs by supervising and training its sales and operations staff.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develops and implement strategic plan to achieve increased group sales revenue and attendance, while maximizing all industry segments.
  • Oversee, build and leverage the multiple programs within Group Sales including group visits, Birthday Parties, Overnights, Scout-specific programming, Performance Groups, Commissioning Ceremonies, FIT and Concierge programs and more.
  • Manage the staff in the Group Sales department, consisting of sales and operations team.
  • Develop, monitor, and improve customer service policies and procedures. Implement tactics which will measure the effectiveness of these policies and help understand where changes need to be made to assure the best overall visitor/client experience.
  • Responsible for the data integrity of the museum’s ticketing and CRM system, Tessitura, for the Group Sale department.
  • Build and maintain relationships with current and past group sales clients, generating new and repeat business.
  • Build and maintain relationships with current vendors that supply food, supplies, program materials for group sales programs
  • Meet with clients both on and off-site to build and maintain relationships and develop new business.
  • Represents the museum and the group sales department by attending trade shows and conferences.
  • Builds, manages and tracks budget for entire Group Sales department.
  • Compile sales reports and provide analysis for SVP of Business Development and to Finance Dept.
  • Work with museum vendors to create successful programs that integrate museum content and retail merchandise
  • Researches and locates new markets and clients within the Tour and Travel industry to generate additional group sales to meet department goals
  • Creates and updates contracts for existing voucher clients and researches new voucher clients to add to our program.
  • Coordinates with Creative Director and VP of Marketing to develop and manage direct marketing programs and materials for direct sales, lead generation, trade shows, and Web campaigns, following marketing plan and budget constraints.
  • Contacts executives and HR departments of organizations, businesses, and other potential clients to explain services and facilities offered by museum and to solicit their business.
  • Supports other departments and division by selling related packages, including but not limited to education workshops, gift bags for birthday parties, etc.
  • Hires, supervises and trains sales staff.
  • Performs duties of staff when needed.
  • Performs other duties as required by management.

The ideal candidate will have a BA/BS in Marketing or a related field with a minimum of 4 years related experience or equivalent combination of both. Excellent organizational, leadership, written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills and be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and efficiently are required. An ability to write reports, business correspondence and marketing materials is a must. Qualified candidates will have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and vendors, as well as an ability to calculate figures and analyze general business periodicals. Proficient computer knowledge, including proficiency with Excel, MS Word, Tessitura CRM/ticketing/budgeting software a major plus. Supervisory experience a must. Strong interpersonal and communication skills at all levels of the organization. Expertise and contacts within the Tour & Travel Industry preferred. This position may require travel and working some weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary will be required.
