The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a non-profit, educational institution featuring the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided missile submarine. The Mission of the Intrepid Museum is to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming, in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth.

The Intrepid Museum is looking for a Volunteer Supervisor.  The Supervisor is responsible for managing the Museum’s Volunteers in their daily responsibilities and to ensure a positive visitor experience. In addition, the Supervisor will help promote the role of volunteers throughout the Museum and to grow the Volunteer Program.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the daily operations of Volunteer Program
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Museum’s policies, applicable laws, and security and safety procedures and practices
  • Conducts interviews of potential candidates; maintains Volgistics software system to track, schedule and inform Volunteers
  • Helps to develop training and customer service programs to ensure Volunteers present accurate information and provide excellent customer service. This will include scheduling and/or arranging training sessions for all Volunteers and prepare necessary collateral material for Volunteers (e.g. handbooks, FAQs, monthly newsletter) as well as visitor handouts
  • Plans and prepares work schedules and assigns Volunteers to specific duties – this includes working with other Intrepid departments to fill their volunteer needs
  • Evaluates performance to ensure  Volunteers adhere to all stated policies and procedures
  • Addresses Volunteer or visitor complaints or issues and resolves problems
  • Assists with assigning Volunteers for Museum events (e.g. Kids Week, Fleet Week, etc.) and other special events; Supervisor may be required to attend/participate in Museum event
  • Assists with planning of volunteer recognition and holiday events; monthly birthday meetings and other volunteer related events
  • Performs duties of subordinates as required
  • Performs other duties as required by management

College degree and two or more years related experience and/or training in a supervisory capacity; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience managing staff in the tourism/attraction/cultural or hospitality field  preferred. Must have ability to manage in a high stress, high visitor volume atmosphere, demonstrating leadership and an ability to handle changing field conditions. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Ability to organize and/or conduct training classes. Ability to organize and manage multiple tasks. Strong interpersonal, communication, and writing skills. Proficient computer knowledge, including proficiency with word processing, database, and spreadsheet software. Demonstrated track record of leadership and high ethical character
