As an educational and cultural nonprofit institution, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum promotes the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth. Located in New York City on the Hudson River, the Intrepid Museum was founded in 1982 with the acquisition of the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark. Welcoming one million visitors annually, the Museum also features the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided missile submarine.

As a vital part of the Visitor Services team, The Box Office Supervisor is a welcoming, enthusiastic, and proactive team member that helps motivate and manage the Box Office team. With an emphasis on hospitality, communication and efficiency the Box Office Supervisor is responsible for maintaining departmental service standards and revenue goals.

Box Office Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the Box Office, supporting and mentoring Cashiers and Visitor Services staff in all aspects of customer service. Supervisors set the tone for the team with a positive, can-do attitude, supporting and empowering staff to create exceptional guest experiences while also maintaining accuracy and integrity in all cash-handling procedures. Box Office Supervisors demonstrate proactive leadership by taking steps to solve problems, improve efficiency, and coach staff. They provide high level hospitality and customer service when responding to guest concerns, while modeling professionalism in speech, dress, and actions. The Box Office Supervisor is a public-facing role to operate the museum in a safe, efficient, and friendly manner.

Supervisory Duties

  • Directly supervises the box office staff.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Maintain excellent knowledge of ticketing software, museum programs and activities, and the types and usage of discounts or offers.
  • Train and evaluate cashiers, providing feedback and coaching as needed.
  • Seek ways of boosting team morale, encouraging staff and helping to create an enjoyable and supportive work environment.
  • Ability to work with and coordinate with other Museum departments.
  • Motivate staff to meet or exceed established sales goals or service standards
  • Ensures compliance of employees with established security, sales and record keeping procedures and practices.
  • Focuses on guest entry experience and suggest improvements to management as necessary.
  • Informs staff of changes in policy, procedure and museum operations.
  • Performs duties of box office staff as necessary.

Cash Handling and Administrative Duties

  • Assists in establishing and maintaining secure cash handling procedures including conducting a daily safe audit upon opening of day as well as at end of day, performing cash pickups and insuring that proper procedures of the box office staff are followed.
  • Accurately keeps all financial/ticketing system records/logs as required by the Finance and Marketing departments.
  • Balances, deposits and reports all nightly box office receipts and transactions.
  • Works with management on concepts for best practices and efficiencies. 
  • Provides oversight for all aspects of the ticketing system and serves as onsite IT contact to ensure all upgrades and functionality is maintained.
  • Maintain a neat, clean, and organized environment, including the accounting office (cash room), storage room, computer equipment, front counters and Welcome Center.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by management.

The ideal candidate will have Four (4) or more years of related cashier, box office, customer service and attraction experience. Three (3) or more years of experience in a supervisory role, preferably in a museum or attraction setting. Cash-handling experience is required. Ability to manage in a high stress, high visitor volume atmosphere, demonstrating leadership and an ability to handle changing field conditions. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, and percent. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to  successfully communicate with the public and employees. Ability to work weekends, holidays, and other evenings as necessary. The ability to work weekends, nights and holidays is required. Experience with the Tessitura ticketing and WhenToWork scheduling systems is preferred. Fluency in one or more foreign languages is a plus. Computer proficiency with the ability to operate Microsoft Word, Excel. Ability to create spreadsheets and logs. Ability to understand and operate ticketing system for ticket sale operations. Must be comfortable in public speaking to both staff and museum guests with ability to direct individuals or groups. Ability to lead, manage, train, and appraise staff effectively. Demonstrated track record of leadership and high ethical character.
