As an educational and cultural nonprofit institution, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum promotes the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth. Located in New York City on the Hudson River, the Intrepid Museum was founded in 1982 with the acquisition of the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark. Welcoming one million visitors annually, the Museum also features the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided missile submarine.

The Information Desk Coordinator maintains and ensures each visitor receives the highest level of customer service set forth by museum practices. This position plays a vital role curating a visitor’s experience by attentively listening, expertly guiding and accurately communicating requested information.

The Information Desk Coordinator will assist the Visitor Services Ambassadors in serving as one of the Museum’s leading representatives by demonstrating exceptional customer service skills with a positive attitude and engaging demeanor.  By displaying a confident and strong work ethic, the Coordinator will support the entire Visitor Services team as they provide a united enthusiasm for the Museum experience.  Their professional and courteous actions will assist the Museum in exceeding the visitor’s expectations.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Provides a high level of customer service by engaging guests, answering questions, resolving problems and/or referring more difficult problems to a supervisor as necessary to ensure a wonderful experience.
  • Actively seeks out and engage guests in conversation, using strategies which may include inquiry, personalizing experiences and appropriate humor to provide exceptional guest experiences.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of daily Museum exhibits, programming, membership benefits, events and operational changes.
  • Communicates Museum policies and offerings; recommends museum itineraries to visitors.
  • Provides facts and historical information about museum, ships, equipment, and artifacts, pointing out features of interest and answering questions.
  • Clearly communicates the mission and message of the Intrepid Museum to guests.
  • Offer directions to other NYC destinations, mass transit options, restaurants or other food service options to guests who inquire
  • Offers to guests the option to purchase audios or tickets to guided tours (up sells).
  • Monitors public inquiries via email, telephone and in person and properly communicates a response in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates business guest and tour arrivals.
  • Contacts appropriate departments via phone, email or radio when issues arise on the floor.
  • Restocks and displays all museum collateral materials.
  • Maintains department radios, ear pieces, ticket scanners, Access program materials and all front line equipment.
  • Cleans and organizes assigned area, behind desk, front counter and storage spaces as needed, to maintain a neat and orderly appearance.
  • Attends regular mandatory training sessions.
  • Performs other duties as required by management.

The ideal candidate will have a High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with three (3) or more years of customer service experience in front line operations at a museum or in an attraction setting, preferably at an Information desk. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos and to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.  Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and other evenings as necessary. Fluency in multiple languages preferred.
