The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a nonprofit educational institution featuring the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided missile submarine. Opened in 1982, the Museum is centered on Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark, and draws over one million visitors each year. The mission of the Intrepid Museum is to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth.

Reporting to the President, the Vice President-Corporate Communications & External Affairs will be a key member of the executive staff and will work closely with the president and other senior leaders. The VP will ensure that the corporate communications & external affairs department supports a range of strategic initiatives and champions the vision and mission of the Museum. The successful candidate must have extraordinary communication skills and be an open, achievement-oriented professional with experience in supporting and engaging key leaders and stakeholders. The individual should have a collegial, team-building style with a demonstrated ability to keep staff engaged, energized and focused on results and cultivate productive, collaborative relationships with key constituents and staff across the institution.

The VP will be a strategic partner and will provide vision and leadership for all internal and external communication and public engagement efforts. The VP will support fundraising initiatives and the overall advancement of the institution and serve as the spokesperson for the institution. The VP will take a proactive approach to developing, implementing and disseminating communications that promote the Museum’s programs, staff and events and will work seamlessly with the vice president of marketing on branding strategies. This is a leadership position that will drive the Museum’s reputation and ensure that the institution’s priorities and messages are closely aligned to drive growth and awareness. The VP positions the institution in front of all related constituencies—public, private, national and local—including funders, public agencies (such as the Department of Education, NASA, the City of New York, New York State and the U.S. government), partners, vendors and others.

The VP will be responsible for a portfolio that includes public and media relations, public engagement and community outreach, publications, development, social media and digital marketing, electronic communication, photography, videography, content strategy and development, printing and production services.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Collaborate with the president and senior leadership to develop external communications strategies and initiatives aimed at advancing Intrepid’s mission.
  • Create and implement a strategic external public relations and communication plan to position the organization as an industry leader and create momentum among the organization’s multiple audiences, extending to the website, print and electronic materials, annual reports, speeches and press releases—to ensure all align strategically with the Museum’s objectives and messages.
  • Ensure excellent working relationships with government leaders, including but not limited to NYC and State and federal leadership. Develop key relationships with other constituents as identified.
  • Responsible for all media inquiry responses.
  • Serve as the Museum’s chief message officer, managing overall messaging and positively positioning the Museum in the travel, tourism and museum/cultural sectors.
  • Oversee all aspects of the development, design, writing, production and dissemination of printed and electronic editorial material, including video as related to communications.
  • Collaborate with the Institutional Advancement Department to develop and implement strategies for cultivating and retaining members and funders.
  • Manage the external communication needs of all departments within the Museum and advise all departments and staff on communication and public relations issues.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve the use of the Museum’s website, social media channels and email for disseminating news and information.
  • Develop strategies to help educate the media and ensure appropriate media coverage for the institution.
  • Maintain existing and establish new relationships with key media and other influencers within a variety of Museum disciplines.
  • Coordinate and maintain the Museum’s relationship with public relations firms.
  • Develop a comprehensive and proactive issues/crisis communication plan and rapid response plan that will effectively preserve the integrity of the Museum’s reputation, history and traditions.
  • Adhere to financial and budgetary planning policies and manage the department’s budget.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required by management, including attendance at particular functions and events throughout the year.
  • Manage internal and external press conferences and events.

Qualified candidates will possess a BA in marketing or communications, or a related field, with five to seven years of experience in a communications role. Proven ability to manage relationships and drive process in a team environment. Self-starter. Must be organized and able to act and follow through on projects independently. Ability to reprioritize projects and work flow based on business needs. Ability to organize and manage multiple tasks with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
