Veterans Veterans
Relevant Badge: American Heritage
Relevant Requirements:
  • 2a) Select two individuals from American history, one a political leader (a president, senator, etc.) and the other a private citizen (a writer, religious leader, etc.). Find out about each person's accomplishments and compare the contributions each has made to America's heritage.
  • 2c) With your counselor's approval, interview two veterans of the U.S. military. Find out what their experiences were like. Ask the veterans what they believe they accomplished.
  • 4d) Take an active part in a program about an event or person in American history. Report to your counselor about the program, the part you took and the subject.
While at the Intrepid Museum:
  • Scouting events often feature Intrepid former crew members who are available for interviews. The veterans are eager to share their stories and answer questions. For additional background, the Intrepid Museum website also features recordings of interviews with former crew members.
  • Learn about important historical figures who served on Intrepid or similar aircraft carriers. For example, George H.W. Bush flew Avenger planes like the one in Intrepid’s hangar deck. Exhibit panels highlight other influential individuals.
  • The Museum regularly hosts public events highlighting important events and people in American history.

Astronomy Astronomy

While at the Intrepid Museum:
  • Many of the badge requirements may be met by attending one of the Museum’s regularly scheduled public Astronomy Nights. Attendees have the chance to observe the night sky with telescopes and binoculars with the guidance of experts on astronomy and stargazing.
  • Astronomy Badge requirements can also be met on Astronomy themed Scout Days!

Historic Site Historic Site
Relevant Badge: Citizenship in the Nation
Relevant Requirements:
  • 2a) Visit a place that is listed as a National Historic Landmark or that is on the National Register of Historic Places. Tell your counselor what you learned about the landmark or site and what you found interesting about it.
While at the Intrepid Museum:
  • The USS Intrepid is a National Historic Landmark. The exhibits around the Museum highlight the ship’s historical significance, so look around for what interests you!

Air and Spacecraft Materials Air and Spacecraft Materials
Relevant Badge: Composite Materials
Relevant Requirements:
  • 2a) Explain what composite materials are. Include a brief history of composites and how they have developed.
  • 2b) Compare the similarities and differences between composites and wood, aluminum, copper and steel. Describe the physical, electrical, mechanical, corrosive, flammability, cost and other such properties. For each of these raw materials, give one example of how it can be shaped and used for a specific application.
While at the Intrepid Museum:
  • The aircraft and spacecraft in the Museum’s collection are made of a variety of materials in relation to their specific function and history. By looking closely at the objects, studying labels and speaking with tour guides and Museum staff, scouts can learn about real world examples of composites and their contexts.

Relevant Requirements:
  • 3) Discuss with your counselor the aspects of emergency preparedness:
    • a) Prepare for emergency situations
    • b) Respond to emergency situations
    • c) Recover from emergency situations
    • d) Mitigate and prevent emergency situations
While at the Intrepid Museum:
  • Learn about how Intrepid former crew members prepared, responded to and recovered from emergency situations on board. Both exhibit panels and tour guides share relevant stories.
  • Watch the Kamikaze: Day of Darkness, Day of Light multimedia movie in the hangar deck about the day Intrepid suffered and survived kamikaze attacks. Learn about the firemen aboard the ship who prevented the resulting fire from spreading and saved the ship.

A Feat of Engineering A Feat of Engineering

Relevant Requirements:
  • Select an engineering achievement that has had a major impact on society. Using resources such as the Internet (with your parent's permission), books and magazines, find out about the engineers who made this engineering feat possible, the special obstacles they had to overcome and how this achievement has influenced the world today. Tell your counselor what you learned.
While at the Intrepid Museum:
  • The Essex Class aircraft carriers—of which Intrepid belongs—helped lead the U.S. to victory in the Pacific Ocean in World War II and transformed naval warfare. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, engineers and construction crews completed Intrepid in 18 months, half the amount of time it normally would have taken. Exhibit panels and tour guides explain how this feat of engineering came about.

Oceonography Oceanography

Relevant Requirements:
  • 2) Define salinity, temperature and density, and describe how these important properties of seawater are measured by the physical oceanographer. Discuss the circulation and currents of the ocean. Describe the effects of the oceans on weather and climate.
  • 5) List the main salts, gases and nutrients in seawater. Describe some important properties of water. Tell how the animals and plants of the ocean affect the chemical composition of seawater. Explain how difference in evaporation and precipitation affect the salt content of the oceans.
While at the Intrepid Museum:
  • Learn about how Intrepid was designed to work in the ocean and how the characteristics of the ocean affected the ship and life aboard it.
  • The Growler and Intrepid crew had to be able to convert ocean water into useable fresh water. Learn from a museum educator or guide about what the crew needed to do in order to accomplish this.

News Story News Story
Relevant Badge: Journalism
Relevant Requirements:
  • 3d) Attend a Scouting event and write a 200-word article (feature or hard news) about the event. Use either the inverted pyramid style of the chronological style. Review the article with your counselor, then submit it to your community newspaper or BSA local council or district newsletter for consideration.
  • 4) Attend a public event and do one of the following:
    • 4a) Write two newspaper articles about the event, one using the inverted pyramid style and one using the chronological style.
    • 4b) Using a radio or television broadcasting style, write a news story, a feature story and a critical review of the event.
    • 4c) Take a series of photographs to help tell the story of the event in pictures. Include news photos and feature photos in your presentation. Write a brief synopsis of the event as well as captions for your photos.
While at the Intrepid Museum:
  • Use your attendance at the Scout Day or Overnight as the subject of your article, news reports or photographs. Think about the most important or interesting aspects of the event.
  • The Intrepid Museum also hosts many public events, such as a Veterans Day ceremony and Fleet Week.
  • Check out the issue of The Ketcher on display. The Ketcher was Intrepid's on-board newspaper. Think about what sort of news The Ketcher would have covered.
    • For practice, do some research on an important event that took place on Intrepid during its time at sea (i.e.: the kamikaze attacks, an important victory, Crossing the Line, etc.). Decide which style of reporting is best suited to the event and report on it in that way.

Photography Exhibition Photography Exhibition

Relevant Requirements:
  • 4b) Choose a topic that interests you to photograph for an exhibit or display. Get your counselor’s approval, then photograph (digital or film) your topic. Process your images. Choose 20 of your favorite images and mount them on poster board. Share your display with your counselor. If you are using digital images, you may create a slide show on your computer or produce printouts for your poster board.
While at the Intrepid Museum:
  • If Intrepid interests you or is related to a topic that interests you (i.e.: transportation, the military, space travel, recreation), photograph it during your visit to the Museum for your display.
  • • Look closely at the Museum’s exhibit displays. How are the photographs and artifacts organized in the display cases? Spend some time looking at a display case that you think is particularly successful at telling its story. Think about how the organization and curation of the case could inspire your own photography exhibit.

Scholarship Scholarship

Relevant Requirements:
  • 2a) Make a list of educational places located where you live (other than schools). Visit one, and report on how you used the place for self-education.
While at the Intrepid Museum:
  • Part of the Intrepid Museum’s mission is to educate, and any visit to the Museum is an opportunity for self-education.

Relevant Requirements:
  • 6d) Make a drawing showing the principles of complete waste treatment.
  • 7a) Make a trip to two of the following places. Write a report of more than 500 words about the soil, water and energy conservation practices you saw.
    • 9) A desalinization plant
While at the Intrepid Museum:
  • Water conservation and waste management were major issues for Intrepid while it was at sea for months at a time. Through the exhibits and installations, learn about the challenges the ship faced in this regard and how the crew members were able to address them.
  • Learn from our educators or tour guides about the desalinization process that Growler and Intrepid crew members had to work with.
