As the summer trend of watching movies in a park (or on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier) becomes an even more popular activity, I consider it my civic duty to help select the top five movies for a perfect* outdoor movie night.
*These movies reflect my crazy personal taste in comedy and romance, and the claims made here are based on the fact that I like to believe everyone shares my sense of humor!
And now, without further delay...
- The Hunger Games: Imagine watching Katniss Everdeen fight tirelessly in the wilderness as you sit on a grassy knoll eating pizza, surrounded by ruthless corporate Manhattanites! Scary, huh? I know! Thrilling is more like it!
- Top Gun: What a great idea for a romantic date night. Grab a bottle of wine and a cozy blanket and watch Tom Cruise steal the hearts of all the women in the audience. Then try to reenact a Maverick and Charlie scene of your choice—minus the dangerously dramatic car and motorcycle chase.
- Furious 7: Okay, this isn’t one of my favorites, but my hubby loves this film and would jump at the chance to see Vin Diesel and Paul Walker race some of the fastest and flashiest cars ever to defeat the bad guys. (That’s what this movie is about, right?) For the ladies, staring at Vin, Paul and Tyrese for a few hours isn’t a bad way to spend an evening!
- Finding Nemo: That’s right, folks—I’m a mom. And as a mom, I’m always looking for new and fun ways to tire my kids out entertain my kids. This adventure-filled animated movie is a great way to bond with the family. The kids especially love the fun moments with the forgetful Dory, voiced by Ellen DeGeneres. What more can you ask for?
- A Nightmare on Elm Street: Freddy Krueger at his best—or worst! The scariest thing about this movie is that the villain attacks you when you fall asleep. Who needs that kind of stress in their life? But if you love the thrill of a chase and blood and guts, then this campy film is right up your alley. You probably won’t bump into me at this movie night, but I’m sure you’ll have a fun time jumping out of your skin every few minutes from all the thrills and chills of this pick.
