Intrepid President Susan Marenoff-Zausner presents the bell from USS New York City to Commander William Herrmann of the USS New York, while The Honorable Steven Honigman looks on
With the 10 year anniversary of 9-11 upon us, Intrepid is commemorating the events with a sunset ceremony and by hosting the US Coast Guard and their 9-11 public event. In addition, Intrepid President Susan Marenoff-Zausner and members of Intrepid’s Exhibits team today presented the USS New York, in port to commemorate 9-11, with a piece from Intrepid’s collection.
Intrepid Sunset Ceremony
Intrepid will host a poignant sunset ceremony Friday evening, September 9 at 6:30pm. The ceremony is free and open to the public and will take place on Intrepid’s Pier 86, near the pieces of 9-11World Trade Center steel that are on display. Officers and crew from USS New York will be in attendance and the ceremony will include remarks from Janice Fedarcyk, Assistant Director in Charge, FBI New York Field Office.
In the early afternoon of September 11, 2001, within hours of the attack on the World Trade Center, the FBI approached Intrepid Museum leadership to request use of the ship as an emergency operations center from which to launch the initial investigation into the attack. Intrepid offered a unique combination of a secure site with land, sea and air access and an easy approach to Ground Zero. Museum leadership immediately agreed and closed Intrepid to the public. Over the next several weeks, 500 FBI agents and other law enforcement operated from Intrepid round-the-clock, fielding half a million phone calls and compiling important intelligence on the 9-11 attacks. In this way, Intrepid, retired from active duty in 1974, again served our nation and played a role in our nation’s response to the attack.
United State Coast Guard Event
On Saturday, September 10th, The US Coast Guard invites the public to attend ‘The US Coast Guard 9/11 New York City Response Retrospective’ taking place in Intrepid’s Lutnick Theater. The event will be held to remember those who lost their lives during the World Trade Center attacks and to discuss actions taken by the US Coast Guard and its agency partners on 9-11 and after.
The event includes panel discussions by Coast Guard, Navy, and Army senior leaders, multi-media presentations and musical performances from the US Coast Guard Band. In addition, the Coast Guard Cutter Bainbridge Island, homeported in Sandy Hook, NJ and a 9-11 first responder asset, will be open for free tours during the event. They day’s activities start at 10:45am.
A Visit and Gift for The USS New York
Today, Intrepid President Susan Marenoff-Zausner and members from Intrepid’s Exhibits team paid a visit to the USS New York, which is parked next to Intrepid and here in NYC for the 9-11 anniversary. The purpose of the visit was to present Commander William Herrmann with an item from our collection – the bell from the submarine The USS New York City (SSN-696). The bell, which was on loan from The Navy, will now have a permanent new home on The USS New York.
The USS New York arrived this morning with a crew of 350 sailors, 60 marines and 170 members of the 9-11 Families Association, including family members of the victims of 9-11 and first responders. Her bow stem is made of 7.5 tons of World Trade Center steel and her motto is ‘Strength Forged Through Sacrifice. Never Forget’
The Honorable Steven Honigman and Intrepid’s Susan Marenoff-Zausner and Rachel Herman look on as Commander Herrmann signs to officially take possession of the bell
