Close to 100 guests gathered in the Intrepid Museum’s Allison and Howard Lutnick Theater on Veterans Day, November 11 for the Seats of Honor Dedication Ceremony.
Appropriately launched last Veterans Day, Seats of Honor is the Museum’s theater seat campaign which pays tribute to American veterans and service men and women with inscribed brass plaques. From Naval Admirals to Army Lieutenants, Navy Cross recipients to USS Intrepid pilots, the 76 honorees tell the diverse stories of the men and women who have served in the Nation’s military from World War I to the present. Many of those honored are former crewmembers of the USS Intrepid, and several returned to the ship for the first time since their service for the Ceremony.
The Dedication Ceremony began with an introduction from Jeanne Houck, Director of Major Gifts & Donor Development and was followed by a welcome from Museum President, Susan Marenoff-Zausner. Additional remarks were made by honoree Ray Stone, a USS Intrepid Plankowner who served aboard the ship during WWII. Guests viewed a slideshow featuring photos of the honorees from their time in service and the moving inscriptions crafted by family members and friends. Following a celebratory toast, guests had the opportunity to see the plaques up close. Museum visitors will be able to see the shining brass plaques for years to come, during the screening of the Museum’s introductory film The Story of Intrepid.
Seats of Honor is an on-going campaign and is a great way to honor someone this holiday season. The Museum hopes to fill all of the theater seats in time for our Dedication Ceremony next Memorial Day.
