The Intrepid Museum’s digital publication Making History Accessible: Toolkit for Multisensory Interpretation received an Award of Distinction for using exceptional and resourceful methods to engage communities and build new audiences. The presentation took place on Monday, April 17, at the Museum Association of New York’s 2023 annual conference “Finding Center: Access, Inclusion, Participation, and Engagement” in Syracuse, New York.

The honor is one of fourteen to be awarded at the conference, celebrating unique leadership, dedicated community service, transformational visitor experiences, community engagement, and innovative programs that use collections to tell stories of everyone who calls New York home.
The Museum partnered with New York University’s Ability Project and collaborated with seven historic sites and house museums, eight disability advocates, Access Smithsonian and National Trust for Historic Preservation to produce an accessible digital publication. This publication Making History Accessible: Toolkit for Multisensory Interpretation, offers a range of digital and physical/tactile solutions to help make interpretive content at historic sites and other educational facilities more accessible.
