This Saturday, January 15th the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will offer its first ever Guided Tours of Concorde G-BOAD and the USS Growler Submarine.
“Concorde: A Supersonic Story,” offered every Saturday in 2011, grants up to twelve guests the rare opportunity to enjoy the comfort of Concorde’s luxurious first class cabin and an up close look inside her sophisticated cockpit. A tour guide will recreate the experience of flying first class at twice the speed of sound.
One of seven British Airways Concordes, G-BOAD is a world speed record holder. This 45-minute tour explores the development and operational history of this technological marvel, the fastest airliner to ever cross the Atlantic.
“Silent Service: The Story of the USS Growler Submarine,” will explore the workings of the world’s oldest existing nuclear missile-carrying submarine.
“Silent Service” will recount the evolution of the submarine as a weapon, and explain how the USS Growler was purpose-built for one strategic mission: to patrol the Pacific coast of the Soviet Union, poised to retaliate if the Soviets attacked the United States first.
Up to twelve guests will see the sub’s features up close, like both periscopes, the torpedo tubes and the crew’s tight living quarters. Visitors will learn how ninety-five gutsy men lived, worked, and played on Growler for three months at a time without seeing daylight or communicating with loved ones, all the while manning the front lines of the Cold War.
