Kids Week kicks off in just a few weeks here at the Intrepid Museum. This year, we’re focusing on the EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS of our universe, from the chilly polar ice caps to the surfaces of distant exoplanets! Starting on February 15, Kids Week will feature a fun-filled lineup of cool science demos, live animals and interactive displays that the whole family will enjoy. Check out the schedule of events, now available on our website.
Kids Week will feature presentations, displays and workshops by Dean Eppler, NASA geologist and spacesuit test subject, and Allison Bolinger, NASA spacewalk flight controller. Also taking the stage will be Mad Science and the Franklin Institute, sharing exciting demos about the science of extreme environments and life in space!
You’ll learn how NASA uses robots to explore extreme environments throughout the solar system from robotics engineer Aaron Parness, head of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Extreme Robotics Group, and discover extreme animal adaptations with zoologist Jarod Miller, who will bring along an arctic fox, an alligator and a North American porcupine.
Between these action-packed presentations, see innovative designs for Mars habitats created by students at the Pratt School of Architecture, check out the latest roving robots built by the teams of FIRST, or head into the pop-up planetarium for an eye-opening show all about our solar system’s most extreme environments. And don’t miss the hands-on activities offered by the Liberty Science Center, Dazzling Discoveries and the CUNYSAT-1 lab, where kids can make their own models of nanosatellites.
There will be readings and book signings by popular children’s book authors in our Meet the Author series. Your family will also have the chance to talk one-on-one with scientists about their fascinating research and ask them questions about the universe in our Meet the Scientist series. And you can take on the special Rube Goldberg Speed Building Challenge, where you’ll have just one hour to build a complex machine that completes a very simple task.
This February, Kids Week is the place to be for extreme learning and fun for boys and girls of all ages!
