Have you ever wondered what it’s like to look through a periscope, to sleep above a torpedo or how submarines dive? On August 5, the Intrepid Museum opens its newest interactive exhibit, Submerged, a hands-on experience to complement the Museum’s submarine Growler, the only American guided missile submarine open to the public.
Located in the Museum’s Exploreum Interactive Hall, a fully interactive exhibit space, Submerged measures 40-feet long and further enhances the family experience with an immersive, accessible and educational submarine environment that is sure to captivate, excite and inspire.
Building on the Museum as a platform from which history and science can be explored through topics related to water, air, space and life at sea, Submerged contains four distinct zones for visitors to explore: berthing (the sleeping quarters), mess (the dining area), control (navigation) and the engine room. Families, school groups and visitors become immersed in experiences that highlight what it takes to be a submariner, what it’s like to live on a submarine and the science behind how submarines work.
Intrepid Museum Members can enjoy a sneak peak of Submerged on Saturday, August 2 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Call 646-381-5030 to join us!
