The Intrepid Museum is proud to serve as a venue for the 7th Annual ReelAbilities: NY Disabilities Film Festival on Saturday, March 14. ReelAbilities, which runs from March 12 to March 18 at venues throughout the city, is the largest festival in the country dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories and artistic expression of people with different disabilities.
Kicking off Saturday’s day-long event will be a screening of The Finishers, a film about a charming 17-year-old boy with cerebral palsy who challenges his distant father to compete with him in the Ironman triathlon—a near impossible feat. Not just a sports film, this is the story of one family’s inspiring journey and a portrait of the love between father and son. The film will be followed by a discussion with Eleanor Cox of Achilles International.
Later in the day, the Museum will screen two short films—Riding My Way Back and The Astronaut’s Secret—each followed by a post-screening program. Riding My Way Back tells the story of a veteran who returns home from Iraq and Afghanistan despondent and suicidal, but finds hope and recovery in his bond with the unlikeliest of saviors—a horse named Fred. The screening will be followed by a discussion with veteran Christopher Jones of GallopNYC.
Following a brief intermission, visitors are invited to stay for a screening of The Astronaut’s Secret, focusing on the life and missions of astronaut Michael “Rich” Clifford, who completed a historic spacewalk while living with Parkinson’s disease.
A T-coil accessible assistive listening system is installed in the Allison & Howard Lutnick Theater. Please contact access@intrepidmuseum.org if you require wheelchair seating, easy access seating, ASL interpretation, audio description, a social narrative or any other accommodation.
Tickets are available for purchase on the ReelAbilities website.
