On Tuesday, November 21, the Intrepid Museum hosted a Thanksgiving celebration for children and adults who are currently living in transitional housing.

The Museum partners with the New York City Department of Homeless Services to provide free programs for families in transitional housing. This past September, 62,351 homeless people—including 15,553 families with 23,445 children—slept in shelters each night in New York City.

The Museum’s annual Gift of Thanksgiving aims to give families a night of ease, entertainment and education. Families spent the evening exploring the Museum and had a Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings, served by Museum staff and volunteers. Children watched demonstrations about the “magic” of science, engaged in fun activities and played in the Museum’s hall of interactive exhibits.

The dinner was catered by CxRA, and refreshments were donated by the Coca-Cola Company. Linens and chairs were provided by Party Rental, and beautiful centerpieces were donated by ZAK Events to make the Museum festive and inviting. Event Network donated toys, books and more items for fun gift bags, and Flight Avionics provided free access to the 4D film Stories of Intrepid.

The Museum thanks everyone who attended and helped make the Gift of Thanksgiving a warm, memorable night for all.

This program is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Community engagement programs at the Intrepid Museum are generously supported by the Rose M. Badgeley Residuary Charitable Trust, Cowles Charitable Trust, May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, and Ambrose Monell Foundation.
