This weekend, October 11-12, celebrate our hometown heroes with Fire Department Appreciation Weekend at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
Throughout this action-packed weekend, visitors to the Intrepid Museum’s Pier 86 will have the opportunity to watch live demonstrations of amazing firefighting techniques performed by the FDNY, such as a “Jaws of Life” Vehicle Extraction, the Stokes Basket Rescue from Intrepid’s flight deck, and the firefighter Personal Safety System. Hot Dog, the FDNY’s Fire Safety Mascot, will also be on hand to join in this weekend of free events and activities on Pier 86.
Don’t miss your chance to meet firefighters of the FDNY 2015 Calendar of Heroes, who will be signing their pages of the calendar on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
And be sure to bring your dancing shoes, too! On Saturday afternoon, the G String Band, featuring Lt. Ralph Bernard and other members of the FDNY, will hit the stage to play popular rock and roll tunes. Sunday’s stage will feature the band Sea Grave, comprised of four Bronx firefighters playing all-original music reminiscent of the best of ‘80s British Pop and modern Alternative rock, as well as Electric Mayhem, also composed of FDNY members, playing classic rock and roll hits.
Join us on Saturday morning for a formal ceremony blessing the FDNY’s marine fleet, including a thrilling water display, a procession of fire boats up the Hudson River and a performance by the FDNY Emerald Society Pipes & Drums.
On October 11-12, museum admission, including the Space Shuttle Pavilion featuring Enterprise, will be complimentary for all firefighters, paramedics, EMTs and fire department personnel, from anywhere in the country (with proper ID). Family members will also enjoy a 50% discount on all general admission tickets, including the Space Shuttle Pavilion (must be accompanied by a fire department employee with proper ID).
