The Intrepid Museum’s new temporary exhibition, HUBBLE@25, will open this Thursday, October 23, in the Space Shuttle Pavilion. The exhibition celebrates 25 years of scientific discovery and highlights original artifacts, amazing deep space images, artistic photographs and immersive experiences all related to the Hubble Space Telescope.
The telescope’s extraordinary images of the cosmos have revolutionized astronomy and transformed the way we view our planet and its place in the universe. HUBBLE@25 includes the rare opportunity to view the actual tools used to repair the Hubble Telescope in space. These objects were designed for the hostile conditions of space and are rarely on public display.
The exhibition also includes dramatic stories to engage visitors of all ages. Visitors will experience:
- An immersive audio-visual environment that shows how astronauts train in a large swimming pool, called the Neutral Buoyancy Lab.
- A hands-on interactive element that explores how the Hubble’s different instruments and sensors “see” the universe.
The exhibition also features images of New York City-based photographer Michael Soluri, who was granted unrestricted access to the astronaut crew of STS-125 during their training for Servicing Mission 4, the fifth and final mission to the Hubble Space Telescope in May 2009. His photography captures both the human elements of exploration and the curiosity of spaceflight, along with the unique hardware and tools that the astronauts employed.
HUBBLE@25 will be supplemented by dynamic public programs and special tours, and Museum Educators will provide demonstrations and programs on Hubble-related science and technology for audiences of all ages and those with special needs.
HUBBLE@25 opens to the public on Thursday, October 23. Intrepid Museum Members can attend an exclusive after-hours preview on Wednesday, October 22.
