Today we remember those we lost so tragically on September 11, 2001, and those who served so nobly in the aftermath.
The acts of courage, compassion and sacrifice that prevailed in the rescue and recovery effort are too many to name. The Intrepid Museum was humbled to support the dedicated law enforcement and brave emergency responders who gave so much of themselves in this effort.
Within hours of the World Trade Center attacks, Intrepid was summoned to serve its country. The Federal Bureau of Investigation set up headquarters on board the ship. Intrepid’s proximity to Ground Zero, as well as its land, sea and air access, made it uniquely suited to serve as an emergency operations center. Five hundred agents worked on the ship for weeks, day and night, fielding half a million phone calls, compiling crucial intelligence and coordinating the massive investigation.
When the call came to help and to serve, Intrepid did, as it had so many times before and as so many others did in the aftermath of the attacks. We will never forget, and the Intrepid Museum will continue to honor their memories and legacies.
