On September 24, 2015, the Intrepid Museum’s Education Department held its orientation for the Leadership Institute for Today and Tomorrow (LIFTT). LIFTT is a yearlong series of programs and experiences that helps New York City high school juniors develop critical skills and insights necessary to succeed in college and serve as active citizens.
Partnering with local educational youth service organizations, LIFTT encourages students to activate their leadership potential, sharpen their public speaking skills and become engaged in community and civic programs, all while preparing them to take the next step in their education—the college application process.
The orientation kicked off LIFTT’s ninth year, and the new cohort of students is ready to get started. This year, our 30 students will work with a variety of organizations, including Four Freedoms Park, Outward Bound and Improv 4 Teens. They’ll also visit New York University and other college campuses. Our hope is that the students in LIFTT come away with a heightened sense of community awareness that inspires them to serve in their own local communities, as well as in the national and global communities.
We wish this year’s cohort the best of luck and look forward to working with them!
