Yesterday was the second of Intrepid’s Salute to Women Power of One events for March 2011. Each of these programs highlight and celebrate the indelible contributions women have made and continue to make in our world.
This Salute to Women in Sports was also an example of the successful collaboration between the Intrepid and Girls Inc. who have joined forces to celebrate Women’s History Month and inspire New York City’s young women to be strong, smart & bold and welcomed 200 NYC public school students.
The Intrepid Museum’s Power of One program allows students to meet and hear from community members who share their experiences and insights about overcoming challenges to achieve success. It is based on the notion that one moving and inspiring event in a young person’s life can initiate a life-changing journey.
The Salute to Women in Sports panel was moderated by NY1’s health & fitness reporter, Kafi Drexel and featured Leslie Allen, a NCAA and Women’s Tennis Association champion; Phaidra Knight, USA Rugby’s Player of the Decade and Zoe Koplowitz, the award-winning author and marathon runner who lives with the daily challenges of both multiple sclerosis and diabetes. Each speaker highlighted their successes and raised the students’ awareness of career opportunities in the sports industry.
Salute to Women is a fine example of the important work that is being done to make sure that all girls have the opportunity to share their voices and make their dreams a reality. Jennifer Weidenbaum, Associate Executive Director of Girls Incorporated of New York City shares, “We are thrilled to partner with The Intrepid to give girls in NYC the opportunity to hear the stories of these inspiring women, who have contributed to women’s sports history. Their stories of triumphing over challenges and being trailblazers empower girls to break barriers in any field they feel passionate about.” |
