GOALS for Girls

by Shay Saleem — Manager of Teen Leadership Programs

The Intrepid Museum values and understand the needs of New York City teens, to offer them unique experiences to increase their awareness of STEM fields and education, to developing their public speaking and presentation skills.

“I still can’t believe I was accepted to GOALS!”
Through teen programs like GOALS (Greater Opportunities Advancing Leadership and Science) for Girls and YLI (Youth Leadership Institute), the Intrepid provides an experience like no other museum.

“I still can’t believe I was accepted to GOALS!” a current GOALS student exclaims, as she takes in the first two weeks of the Summer Intensive program.

This rings true for both the GOALS and YLI program: acceptance.

GOALS is a school-year round, all-girl program created, run and supported by the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and a host of visionary sponsors. Girls from all over New York City are provided with awesome STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and leadership based workshops, activities, trips and experiences. With the Summer Intensive as the entry point of participation, it marks the beginning of a variety of different offerings to follow during the year.

YLI@IntrepidYLI@Intrepid, another school year-round teen program, provides male and female high school sophomores with engaging and educational workshops, activities, and trips to strengthen their skills in public speaking, presentation, and communication. Students are challenged with resume writing, interview skills and public speaking to manage the demanding endeavour of applying for higher education.

A YLI alum shares his style of positively interacting with the public by, “speak[ing] confidently, friendly and show[ing] professionalism in order to fulfill Intrepid mission to inspire youth”.

Intrepid’s teen programs, motivates students to challenge themselves, think of others, commit to public service towards the betterment of communities, and develops workforce and life skills in successfully navigating the diverse pathways towards higher education and ultimately their dream jobs.
