On Tuesday, March 22nd the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in a special partnership with N.Y.I.T and Con Edison hosted a unique Youth Leadership Conference in honor of Intrepid’s historic Salute to Women Month that showcased why S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, and math) studies are so critical and compelling.
This Youth Leadership Conference welcomed 165 middle school students and teachers from World Journalism Prep and The Young Women’s Leadership School in Queens and MS127 in the Bronx for a special daylong event aboard the Intrepid where students had the opportunity to mentor with 21 dynamic and compelling women in the S.T.E.M. fields. Students discussed what it takes to make it in these exciting and challenging professions and were also inspired by each woman’s personal journeys and life lessons.
The mentors and students also experienced in-depth interactive tours of the majestic ship with Intrepid educators to discuss related exhibits and enjoyed lunch in the Intrepid’s restored mess deck.
Students kept reflection logs to catalog their thoughts, questions and comments about the day’s activities so that when back in the classroom, teachers can draw from this feedback to facilitate further discussion about this compelling STEM conference.
