The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is an educational and cultural non-profit institution featuring the legendary former aircraft carrier and National Historic Landmark USS Intrepid, the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided-missile submarine. Since its opening in 1982, the Intrepid Museum has dedicated itself to a mission of promoting the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth. Intrepid is seeking a full-time experienced Accountant who will report to the AVP, Government Grants Development & Management within the Finance Department. This position offers an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to be part of a fantastic team and work in one of New York City’s great landmarks! He/she will be responsible for a portfolio of government and foundation grants: partnering with program staff to develop budget proposal, monitor awards, and analyze spending levels; managing general ledger accounts and reconciliations; and facilitating timely close-out of grants. Essential duties are:

  • Review grant award documents to identify and understand grant-specific requirements.
  • Develop and maintain grant reporting schedules.
  • Monitor and reconcile grant expenditures to the general ledger regularly, including preparation of relevant journal entries and adjustments quarterly. 
  • Review and ensure expenditures are allowable and in compliance with grant requirements.
  • Provide internal stakeholders with timely and accurate financial information to in order for them to manage their fiscal and project objectives.
  • Communicate variances and discrepancies to program management staff.
  • Ensure timely submission of all required financial and grants reports to government agencies and private funders..
  • Process requests for reimbursements and advances on grants and contracts.
  • Maintain complete and up-to-date physical and electronic grant files in an organized and audit-ready manner.
  • Assist with all government grant audits, including financial, compliance and annual A-133 audits.
  • Facilitate the development of budgets for grant proposals, including proposals for new programs and initiatives
  • Undertake special projects as assigned, including assistance with grant proposals.
  • Perform other duties as required by management.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting with at least 3 years of experience, preferably working in the not for profit environment. Demonstrated familiarity with cost accounting standards and/or OMB Circulars a plus.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and Word is required.
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and complete assignments under strict deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with people in a team setting. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
