On Sunday, September 26th, Curator of Aviation and Aircraft Restoration, Eric Boehm, led a group of thirty Members on an afternoon outing to the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, Long Island.
The Cradle is a wonderful museum that highlights the early achievements and industries of aviation on Long Island. This museum lives up to its name as many of the historic events that shaped modern air travel can be traced directly back to the pioneering days on the Hempstead Plains. From the record breaking distance flights of Glen Curtiss in 1909, the famous Atlantic crossing of Charles Lindbergh in 1927, and the blind flying achievements of famed aviator Jimmy Doolittle in 1929, are just examples of the many events that mark this Long Island town as the Cradle of Aviation. In the 1930’s and 1940’s many new companies were founded in Garden City and went on to forge the advanced weapons that brought victory to the U.S. in times of war.
