The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a nonprofit educational institution featuring the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and a guided missile submarine. Opened in 1982, the Museum is centered on Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark, and draws over one million visitors each year. The mission of the Intrepid Museum is to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth.

Reporting to the VP of Institutional Advancement, the Director of Grants and Foundation Relations is an essential leader in the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s Institutional Advancement team and leads the Intrepid Museum's efforts to manage our relationships with our foundation partners and to develop new relationships within this important sector. The Director supervises the Manager for Grants and Foundation Relations and a part-time Senior Grant Writer.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Leads the development of an annual plan to build relationships with, and secure funding from, institutional funders to meet the Museum’s strategic goals and fulfill its mission
  • Serves as a frontline fundraiser and relationship manager for private and corporate foundations
  • Identifies new and existing funding sources and opportunities and grows foundation portfolio to achieve revenue goals, developing a strategy for each foundation relationship
  • Develops and submits grant proposals and ensures appropriate follow-up and stewardship including grant reports and renewal requests
  • Works closely with program staff to establish goals, prioritize grant seeking, and align funding with needs by involving them in developing proposals and budgets, and in donor meetings
  • Reviews fundraising plan progress reports with department heads regularly
  • Represents the Intrepid Museum’s mission to external contacts including senior corporate and private foundation representatives
  • Stays abreast of and informs colleagues about trends and new opportunities in philanthropic giving
  • Maintains relationships with existing funders
  • Manages and prioritizes projects to meet deadlines and ensures prompt acknowledgment of foundation gifts
  • Crafts boilerplate proposals, letters of intent, and other correspondence on a variety of programs and projects, adapting to funder specifications
  • Maintains reporting schedule and works with staff on narrative and financial reports
  • Responsible for collecting, analyzing and reporting data on the performance of program activities that are funded through grants

Other Activities

  • Serves on various interdepartmental committees as a representative of the Institutional Advancement team
  • Facilitates a quarterly, interdepartmental Grants Meeting

Qualifications
BA/BS degree from an accredited college or university. Grant writing experience, with minimum of 5 years of experience in Development. Excellent writing skills; the ability to edit persuasive letters and materials that compellingly communicate mission of the Intrepid Museum.  Understanding of the record-keeping and stewardship systems that support a successful foundations relations program.  Broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising – able to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle, to initiate contacts with potential donors.  Ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple projects and prioritize fundraising activities effectively. Comfort with managing multiple assignments in a fast-paced non-profit setting. Experience with and knowledge of computer operation; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google docs, etc.) Experience with Raiser’s Edge or Tessitura database a plus. Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary.
