ABOUT
This exhibit represents the pure delight of research and curiosity as it imagines humanity’s message to others that may inhabit the cosmos.
Humans have dreamed of sailing to the stars for thousands of years. This experiment investigates unique materials and approaches to develop a vehicle capable of reaching another star system at speeds never thought to be achievable.
Holograms, the kind seen on passports and trading cards, may help stabilize the sail on its 40-trillion-mile trip. But they may also serve as carriers of artwork, images of life on Earth, to greet any beings that live on distant worlds.
The prototypes in the exhibit represent a real space mission launching sometime this year on Alpha CubeSat, a project of the Space Systems Design in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell.
En 1978, la NASA seleccionó una nueva clase de astronautas para el programa del transbordador espacial, entre los cuales se incluían los primeros astronautas afroamericanos, el primer astronauta asiático y las primeras astronautas mujeres. Estas personas aportaron diversos talentos al cuerpo de astronautas trabajando como pilotos, médicos, científicos, ingenieros y oficiales militares. Antes del programa del transbordador espacial, ninguna mujer estadounidense había volado al espacio con la NASA.
